What it's like Serving in Belize

ree

Servant Life partners with Just 1 Global, a Christian organization who serves several communities in partnership with local churches throughout the country.

Belize is a country filled with diverse people groups, rich history, unique landscapes, and adventurous experiences. The land is formed by mountains, jungles, swamps, and beaches, leaving much to explore by everyone that visits. Belize is well known for Caye Caulker Island, the world’s second largest barrier reef, where many enjoy snorkeling. Its agriculture has much to offer as well where farmlands exist for butterflies and coffee beans and regular produce like beans, corn, rice, fruits, and sugar.

Its population is predominantly made up of people with Mayan, Mestizo, or Creole heritage. Its official language is English due to its history as a British colony until 1973 when it gained independence from the United Kingdom. This makes it easy for short-term mission teams to engage quickly with those they come in contact with while serving. Many also speak Spanish or Creole. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic or Protestant and around 15% of the population considers themselves not religious.

When serving in Belize, short term teams join local churches in their current ministry to help meet the needs of the community. Teams often have opportunities to visit villages and homes, participate in sports ministry, lead VBS, provide various items like solar lights or jewelry, and engage in other activities that fit the needs of the community. Throughout their time in Belize, teams also have opportunities to experience the culture and beauty of the country. They can visit the farmlands, explore the Mayan Ruins, snorkel around Caye Caulker Island, or zip line the Belizean Jungle!

Going to Belize allows for cultural growth and for growth as disciples of Jesus. It is the heart of Just 1 Global to not only make disciples within the community, but within their teams as well.
