What it's Like Serving in Alaska

ree

Servant Life partners with a local ministry in Delta Junction, Alaska called Alaska Joy Missions. Our partner serves alongside local churches to support them in their ministry to reach the Alaskan community, a community influenced by extreme seasonal conditions.

With an area of 17.26 square miles, Delta Junction has a population of around 1000 people. The land is known for its agriculture and its view of the Alaska Range, the home of many buffalo, reindeer, elk, cattle, Tibetan Yaks, moose, caribou, and homesteaders. The town is just 95 miles from Fairbanks, AK, known as the Land of the Midnight Sun where the sun shines until late into the night in the summer.

With the abundance of sunlight in Alaska summers, the community comes alive where people are often taking advantage of what the outdoors have to offer. They spend time hiking, playing sports, and enjoying the midsummer Deltana Fair.

In contrast to the lively summer-time culture in Delta Junction, AK, the winter months consist of just a few hours of sunlight and cold temperatures. While the extreme cold and lack of sunlight keeps many indoors, the Northern Lights offer a sense of wonder.

Our partner, Alaska Joy Missions, is passionate about helping pastors in their ministry and reaching the Alaskan community. They strive to make the hope of the gospel known across their community through kid’s ministry and caring for local pastors.

Teams going to Delta Junction get to join Alaska Joy Missions in helping churches with kid’s ministry and with other needs that churches may have at that time. During the day, teams get to help host VBS or Day Camp for the children in the community, and in the evening, they will get to engage in the summer-time events. The community events serve as an opportunity for teams to build relationships with the locals and share the gospel. There are also opportunities to engage in light construction projects or manual labor in the church or community.

Serving in Alaska is a unique opportunity where teams get to witness the long summer nights and engage in the lively summertime culture. Teams are encouraged to come ready with energy to serve local kid’s ministries and build relationships with the community.

If you are praying about a mission trip to Alaska, we would love to join you in those prayers, and help make this trip a reality. You can reach us at info@servantlife.com or 800-772-2615.
