4 Ways to Prepare Spiritually for a Mission Trip

Going on a short-term mission trip can take a lot of preparation. An aspect of our lives that needs preparation before a trip is our spiritual wellbeing. We need Christ’s strength and wisdom to build us up and carry us while on mission.

Prayer

One of the first ways you can prepare spiritually is by remaining in prayer. Prayer opens your eyes and heart to God’s direction. Leading up to a mission trip, there are a few ways you can pray: pray for the community, pray for your team, pray for your own heart, and pray for humility to obey His calling. Prayer can serve as an avenue to making the gospel known, and it can start building a foundation for what is to come.

Quiet Time

Choose a time that you can meet with the Lord daily. Grab your Bible or a devotional book and ask God what He wants you to learn from your reading. Quiet time with the Lord helps us to understand His Word and His character more deeply.

Surrender

You may have already surrendered your life to Christ, so you may be asking, what else is there to surrender? Every day we are faced with challenges that take our attention away from God. What areas of your life take your attention from Him? How can you redirect your attention to God so you can hear His voice even louder? Releasing our distractions to God keeps us focused on His mission.

Look for evangelism opportunities

One of the best ways to be prepared to go on mission is to already be in the habit of talking of Jesus. Who around you needs to hear about Jesus? What conversations can you have right now in your hometown? Sometimes starting a conversation about Jesus can be scary or intimidating. Having some practice under your belt can prepare you for talking about Him with someone new. Putting trust in Him to speak through you and use you in gospel conversations can carry you farther than you know.
