Kenya: How the Church is Growing

Updated: Jul 17

In Kenya, Servant Life has partnerships in Nairobi and Kisumu, both of which are affected by food insecurity and poverty. Our partnerships aim to serve the marginalized, underprivileged, and destitute communities living in the slums and rural areas. Community organizations in the area are working to serve their population through food distribution, evangelism and discipleship training, events, and a variety of other opportunities to serve the current needs of the communities.

What will I be doing in Nairobi?

We partner with Swahiba Networks in Nairobi who directly serves the Kibera slums. Kibera is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in the world, housing 250,000 people. Out of the 5.7 million in Nairobi, 2.5 million of their population are living in slums. Swahiba Networks serves their community through providing food baskets and having gospel conversations in families’ homes, visiting the Young Offenders Reception Center to minister to young offenders, speaking in Purity Clubs in high schools, and organizing sports outreach events. Teams get to come alongside Swahiba Networks through these ministry outlets, and they get to engage in local church services and cultural activities.

What will I be doing in Kisumu?

We partner with a baptist organization called Nourishing the Nations in Kisumu who strives to meet both the spiritual and physical needs of the community. Malnourishment is a serious issue across the communities of Kenya. Nourishing the Nations recognizes the large need for nourishment within families by providing feeding programs to their population through partnerships with local churches. Teams get to come alongside this organization and local churches to provide food for malnourished families, sharing the gospel with them and inviting them to church. Teams will also get to engage in cultural experiences in Kisumu, host ministry events with local churches, and participate in labor projects.

This is just a small picture of how short-term teams can serve the people of Kenya. We would love to partner with you in making a mission trip to Kenya happen. If you are feeling called to serve in Kenya, please reach out to us at info@servantlife.com.
