Puerto Rico is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea and home to approximately 3.4 million people. It is formally a part of the United States (no passport needed for U.S. citizens!). This tropical paradise has been a popular tourist destination for years, but when Hurricane Maria hit in September 2017, everything changed. Devastated by the storm, the region has had a hard time rebuilding and is still in desperate need of practical assistance, and most of all, the life-changing hope of the gospel. Many times, it is when people are in desperate need that they are most responsive to the good news of salvation through faith in Christ. We hope to take advantage of this window of opportunity by working with local churches to repair homes, show the sincere love of Christ, and point people to the path to salvation along the way.

Puerto Rico provides a perfect opportunity for youth or adult groups to go on an inexpensive “overseas mission trip” in a foreign context without leaving the United States.

What will my team be doing?

Mission Teams will work alongside missionaries and local churches to do daily hurricane relief repairs and clean up, including house repairs. In addition, teams will be a part of youth and children’s outreach that will help churches and church plants in the areas. If teams are suited, they may also be involved with special adult outreach, beach ministry, door-to-door survey work, music/drama ministry, etc. We have several great contacts with local churches, Christian Schools, and other helpful contacts on the Island. Our vision for ministry in Puerto Rico includes evangelism and discipleship in all of our endeavors—even hurricane relief work will be focused on evangelism and discipleship.

What does a general weekly schedule look like?

  • Saturday. Travel day. Arrive and get settled in.

  • Sunday. Worship at local church. Afternoon beach day and sightseeing (Old San Juan, Fuerte San Felipe del Morro, San Juan Cathedral, numerous museums, etc.).

  • Monday - Thursday. Ministry: VBS, home repairs and construction, evangelism, sports ministry, door to door visits.

  • Friday. Travel day. Depart for home.

What does my cost include?

  • Housing. Your team will sleep in bunk bed style accommodations with access to hot showers and bathrooms.

  • Meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day! (Note: You need to pay for your own meals at the airport, while traveling, etc.)

  • T-Shirt. Every participant gets an awesome mission trip t-shirt.

  • Pre-Trip Training Material. We provide training sessions, trip overview documents, assistance from our team of mission trip experts, and communication with in-country missionaries to make sure your group is fully prepared for your trip.

  • Pre, During, and Post-trip Devotionals. This 4-week printed missions journal will help every team member grow and encounter Christ.

  • Note: In-country transportation is NOT included for this trip. You will need to secure your own rental vehicles in Puerto Rico for the week. For all of our international locations, transportation is completely covered as part of the cost. But for domestic locations, including Puerto Rico which is a U.S. territory, you would need to rent vehicles for the week. Anyone with a valid U.S. license can drive, and our team can help with the process of securing vehicles, but they are not included in the trip cost.

Airfare is not included in the trip cost, but will be taken care of by Servant Life's travel agent who gets humanitarian rates and often free baggage. You may book on your own if you prefer to do so, but we ask to approve the itinerary first.
