Servant Life partners with a local church in Memphis who is reaching their community with the hope of Christ by bringing the gospel directly to the community. For the children and youth living in the communities around the church and scattered around Memphis, drugs, gangs, crime, and violence have become a way of life. Many families have been impacted by some type of abuse and the results can be seen everywhere. Short-term teams will be serving in a low-income area of North Memphis where the physical poverty is matched by the spiritual poverty, and will be ministering to children and families in local parks and apartment complexes. Each of these locations has been vetted by our local team and is safe for groups to come and minister; the local church has a year-round presence in these areas and is welcomed with open arms.

In partnership with the local church, we seek to impact the lives of children and their families by meeting them where they are and running Backyard Bible Clubs in their neighborhoods, where they feel most comfortable. We also strive to meet the needs of the community and love them the way that Jesus Christ loves us.

What will my team be doing?

Short-term teams are a huge part of this local church's outreach, as there are many communities across North Memphis that need to see the light of the gospel. During spring break and summer, multiple teams are serving each week in order to impact multiple communities with the good news of Christ. Teams are involved in Backyard Bible Clubs as well as other service projects throughout the course of the week. Other service projects could include sports camps, relational ministry, or community service projects. A few times during the week, teams are part of a worship service together before heading into the communities again the next morning.

What does a general weekly schedule look like?

  • Sunday. Travel day. Arrive and get settled in. Check-in between 4 & 5 p.m. Pizza dinner and orientation in the evening.

  • Monday - Thursday. Ministry days: Morning devotional and prayer; backyard Bible clubs; lunch; afternoon projects; dinner; evening worship and church group gathering time.

  • Wednesday evening: Free night in Memphis! No activities at the church. Enjoy a night off. (You will need to purchase your dinner this night).

  • Friday. Breakfast, morning Bible clubs, dismissed at lunch.

Note: Spring Break weeks have a different schedule than summer, with community projects in the morning and Bible clubs after school. There is typically not a time of evening worship during Spring Break either, although your group would have time to meet together however you desire.
